Tibi's spring 2009 collection was inspired by designer Amy Smilovic's time in Hong Kong, but clothes had a slightly `80s vibe—and so did the accompanying hairstyles. "I think hair's been loose and touchable now for ages, so I quite like a solid `80s-inspired hairdo. I fought against them for years but now a lot of the styles from the `80s are coming back," says Kevin Ryan, the tress master behind Tibi's structured coif.
To begin, Ryan molded a bouffant at the front using a curling iron and comb for backcombing; he then brought hair together into a "low conservative bun" at the back. For models with thinner strands, he wrapped locks around a hair sponge to help give the chignon shape.
