"It's not a chignon, it's not a circleit's more of a flower shape," hairstylist Jeffrey Paul says of Pinto's off-center twist. "The hair is divided into three parts that twist and meet at the backlike three rivers joining together in a whirlpool." The first step in creating Pinto's pretty Oscar do? Research! According to Paul, he and Pinto perused a handful of magazinesincluding the two most recent issues of ELLEin order to get ideas. From there, they went to work in Pinto's hotel room, experimenting with different looks. "At first, we thought we would pull her hair back and leave the ends messy, but it didn't look right with her John Galliano dress," says Paul.
To create the look, Paul, who styled on behalf of Aveda, washed Pinto's hair with Aveda Pure Abundance Volumizing Shampoo and Aveda Pure Abundance Volumizing Clay Conditioner. Next, he mixed Aveda Phomollient Styling Foam and Aveda Light Elements Defining Whip, working the concoction into Pinto's damp strands. "When creating an updo, it's important to use products that give thickness and body," says Paul. "Pinto's hair already has a lot of shine, but the cocktail provided just the right amount of hold, body, and texture without weighing her hair down." Finally, after blow-drying Pinto's tresses, Paul created a left side part and pulled a third of her hair into a low ponytail just behind her right ear. After twisting the pony into a flower shape and securing with pins, Paul added the remaining two-thirds of Pinto's hair to the flower, creating a layered, rose-like effect.
