While most Hollywood A-listers are opting for understated strands and tidy chignons, Drew Barrymore has been rocking glamorous, tempestuous tressesher hairstylist, Giannandrea, first raised eyebrows with Barrymore's Golden Globes bouffant and has been doing so ever since! His most recent statement-making coif? Barrymore's pumped-up pony at the He's Just Not That Into You L.A. premiere. "You have to stay alive in these difficult economic times," says Giannandrea. "Drew gives me ultimate trust, and she knows I'm going to put her on the red carpet with a hairstyle that challenges the current situation."
Citing Garren as his mentor, Giannandrea credits the legendary hairstylist with inspiring his current retro phase. "This type of hair is one of his fortes, so when I play in the '60s era, he is a big part," he says. When dabbling in this decade for the He's Just Not That Into You red carpet event, the creative coiffeur strategically placed Barrymore's pony where the cranium tilts down ("if it were a higher ponytail, it would be more '50s"). He then wrapped a fallwhich he hand-stitched with a hole in the centeraround Barrymore's natural strands and secured with pins ("you have to have extra hair in order to get that big feeling"). After brushing Barrymore's curls and the fall's curls together, Giannandrea looped a piece of hair around the base of the pony for a seamless finish.
The question is will Giannandrea continue his '60s streakor will he and Barrymore move on to a different decade in a couple days, weeks, or months? "Drew is so much funshe's a chameleon, and she's always willing to try new things," he says. "She really likes the big hairif it's done in good taste, it makes you feel beautiful. But I wouldn't be surprised if we took it in a whole new direction. When you're in front of the world, you can't be a plain Jane!"
