"I think designers are designing for hair that's shorter," says Ted Gibson, coiffeur for Jenni Kayne's spring 2010 show. "With the down economy, we're seeing women that are stronger and tougher." To complement the chunky blazers, crisp menswear-inspired shirts, and streamlined dresses in Kayne's collection, Gibson fashioned pulled-back hairstyles that mimicked model Sigail Currie's cropped asymmetrical cut (when Kayne saw Currie at a casting session, she had been inspired by Currie's short do). After creating a deep side part like Currie's ("It flatters everyone"), Gibson fastened models' hair in back using an elastic, letting loose ends peek out for an "effortless," slightly mussed appearance. To create the illusion of a shorter do from the front, Gibson left locks on one side of the head undone.
