"Monique had a beautiful inspiration board with a ballerina and a smoky, operalike atmosphere," says Sabrina Michals, who crafted the ballerina-inspired buns for Lhuillier's fall 2009 presentation, adding that "the clothes are beautiful and elegant, and she didn't want the hair to take away from that."

To create the simple yet sophisticated updo, Michals had a hands-on approach: "I'm not using a brush to gather the hair into a low pony because I want the chignon to be as tight and clean as possible." After securing tresses—twisting and pinning them into a "not too neat, not too messy" bun—Michals misted Bumble and bumble's Spray de Mode hairspray and used a toothbrush to tame flyaways around the ears and hairline.
