In addition to being a style icon, fashion designer, and fragrance guru—Victoria Beckham is also an infallible soothsayer of future hair trends. From the asymmetrical bob to the boyish crop, her coifs have inspired others to chop their locks too. Lately, however, it seems that the pixie-haired celebrity is growing out her strands. Is she segueing into a longer hairstyle? And if so, how lengthy will she go?

"We're growing it out, but that doesn't mean it's going to be long," says Jessica Galvan of Neil George Salon, Beckham's hairstylist of nearly three years. "We're still going to keep her in the `short hair' category but it won't be as short as it's been—you have to remember that she had a very short crop this whole year and all of 2008. But now it's in that phase where it's growing and we're able to do more with it. Nothing is written in stone but the final look may be just above the shoulder. I can't say exactly what the cut will be, but we'll figure it out."

Beckham recently sat courtside at a Lakers game with a wavy new do (see photo above), sending ripples through the blogosphere. "She came into the salon earlier that day and told me she wanted to try something different," says Galvan, adding, "That's all she said. She's very easygoing and always lets me play around a bit."

When brainstorming a new style for Beckham, Galvan says she thought of waves "because her hair is always straight." Opting for a flat iron over a curling iron, the coiffeur began by waving a few pieces and got so inspired that she wound up doing the whole head. "I wanted soft, natural-looking waves—a romantic yet edgy look—so I used a flat iron," says Galvan, who notes that when using a curling iron on short hair you run the risk of looking like a "soccer mom" or "Prom queen."

For bounce and lift, Galvan misted Beckham's roots with Neil George Volumizing Spray. Next, she placed pieces of hair inside a flat iron and started an inch away from the base. "I ran the flat iron down the length of the hair and twisted as I went," she says. "The movement is the same as if you're straightening but the difference is that you're turning the flat iron to create a loose curl." Click here for a video tutorial on how to do this technique.

Lastly, Galvan took a couple of face-framing pieces and straightened them ("I wanted to create texture by mixing waves with straight hair"). After using Neil George Indian Gooseberry Oil on the ends for shine, she sprayed Davines Defining System Glam Power Spray all over to finish ("It's mild and workable and allows the hair to move").
