Whether prancing across the room for last-minute wardrobe adjustments or bopping their heads in sync with their iPods, one thing was for certain: backstage at the Issa resort 2010 show, models' loose, messy-chic knots stayed eerily in place. Their secret? Homemade bungee ties courtesy of Liam Carey, a hairstylist at Ted Gibson Salon. "Use a clear elastic—preferably one with no grip—and put a bobby pin at each end," explains Carey. "Once you have the hair gathered, push one end of the bungee up from underneath, wrap the elastic around, and seal the pony by hooking the other pin in place." (To finish the hairstyle, Carey twisted the ponytail into a knot and pinned strands into a textured chignon.) Bonus: In addition to a slip-free pony or tousled bun, beginning with a bungee also ensures less hair breakage. "When it comes time to undo the pony, it just falls out—there's no tugging or pulling," says Carey.
