Best At Home Hair Color - Hair Color Trends - Redbook Whether you're at the salon or shopping at the drugstore, these are the colors you want: rich browns, spicy reds, golden blondes. Celebrity hair guru Rita Hazan talks the trends.

Upgrade Your Shade

Whatever your hue, these tips and products will help you get and keep a hair color you love.

How to get it: Brunette

How to get it: Brunette

Your celeb inspiration: Anne Hathaway

At the salon, ask for: a rich, deep brown with subtle highlights of chestnut or chocolate. "This brown is anything but flat," Hazan says. "It's got lots of different warm tones."

At home, look for: semipermanent rather than permanent color, so the varying tones of your natural color will show through. (Bonus: Grays will look like highlights!) Shop the shade: Clairol Natural Instincts in Hazelnut, $8.99.

Skip this trend if: your skin is superpale; the contrast between your skin and hair will be too much, Hazan warns. Try a lighter brown instead.

How to keep it: Brunette

1. Use shine-enhancing shampoo and conditioner. Try John Frieda Brilliant Brunette Liquid Shine, $6.50 each.

2. Try a once-a-week deep conditioner, like Paul Labrecque Repair Condition Restorative Protein Mask, $40.

3. Apply a root touch-up product. "Believe it or not, brunettes are pretty high-maintenance," Hazan says. "The gray shows up faster than on other shades." Try Colormark TouchBack in Medium Brown, $30, a fat "magic marker" that temporarily hides any gray.

How to get it: Blonde

How to get it: Blonde

Your celeb inspiration: Reese Witherspoon

At the salon, ask for: a bright, multitonal blonde. "The rule of toning down blondes in winter is gone," Hazan says. If your hair is light to start, just add highlights. If you're a medium brown, lighten your base color just a few shades, then highlight to a golden blonde.

At home, look for: a permanent blonding kit in a light golden blonde. But be careful: Stray too far from your natural color and your hair can turn orange. To be safe, "pick a box that's two shades darker than you think you want to go," Hazan says. Shop the shade: L'Oréal Preference in Light Golden Blonde, $9.49. If you're brave enough to highlight at home, try the new Heads Up! Couture Highlighting Kit, $49, from colorist Kelly Van Gogh. It comes with the same tools you'd find in a salon (bowls, clips, wands, etc.) for a pro-like result.

Skip this trend if: your hair is naturally dark; shoot for a honey blonde instead.

1. Use a repairing shampoo and conditioner to undo the damage from lightening. Try Garnier Fructis Fortifying Shampoo and Cream Conditioner, $4 each.

2. Try a twice-weekly deep-conditioning treatment, such as Klorane Intense Nutrition Repair Mask with Mango Butter, $24.

3. Apply a lightweight shine spray that doubles as heat protection. Try Biolage Colorcare Thérapie Shielding Shine Mist, $14.

How to get it: Redhead

Your celeb inspiration: Mad Men's Christina Hendricks

At the salon, ask for: a spicy, coppery auburn. "This color isn't dramatically bright, but it has a lot of depth," Hazan says.

At home, look for: a permanent shade of copper or auburn. "You need permanent color to get this level of pigment intensity," Hazan explains. Shop the shade: Revlon Colorsilk in Bright Auburn, $3.69.

Skip this trend if: you're very dark-skinned or have olive skin tones; you need a red that has less orange, more blue.

1. Use a daily shampoo and conditioner that add moisture. Try Jonathan Product Hydrating Shampoo, $20, and Conditioner, $22.

2. Try a shampoo or treatment that deposits gold tones. The right red-enhancer is hard to find, and reds fade fast. "Gold tones will keep color fresh," says Hazan. Try Ojon Restorative Leave-In Treatment Repair for Blonde Hair, $29.

3 Apply a heat-protective product "so the blow-dryer or iron will burn off the product, not your color," Hazan says. Try Nexxus Heat Protexx, $12.
